I came to Santa Barbara Recovery struggling with alcohol use disorder and honestly feeling lost and hopeless. I’ve been to several treatment centers before, but my experience at Santa Barbara Recovery was different in the best way. Spending 90 days there completely changed my life and gave me a second chance that I’ll always be grateful for. From the moment I arrived, the staff treated me with compassion, patience, and genuine care. The counselors, therapists, techs, and support staff created an environment where I felt safe enough to open up, be honest with myself, and really start working on my recovery. The groups were incredibly helpful and gave me tools that I still use every single day. One thing that really stood out to me was the bond that I built with both the staff and the other clients. There’s something powerful about being surrounded by people who truly understand the struggles that come with drugs and alcohol because they’ve either lived it themselves or have dedicated their lives to helping people through it. The connections I made during my time there felt genuine and unbreakable, and having that sense of community and support made a huge difference in my recovery. What also stood out to me was how personal and genuine the support felt. I never felt like just another client. The staff truly cared about helping me build a foundation for long-term sobriety, not just getting through treatment. One of the most important things Santa Barbara Recovery helped me with was getting involved in AA. Through the meetings and support they encouraged, I found a sponsor who is now guiding me through the 12 steps and helping me continue growing in sobriety outside of treatment. That sense of community and accountability has made a huge difference in my life. I especially want to give a huge thank you to Greg and Juan. Both of them were incredibly supportive, understanding, and always willing to listen when I was struggling. Their compassion, patience, and encouragement truly helped me through some difficult moments, and I’ll never forget the impact they had on my recovery journey. Recovery is not easy, but Santa Barbara Recovery gave me hope, structure, accountability, and a real support system when I needed it most. Today I’m sober, connected to recovery, and moving forward with a completely different outlook on life. I’m deeply grateful for everyone there and would highly recommend Santa Barbara Recovery to anyone who is serious about changing their life and getting sober.

This place helped change my life for the better . Being from the east coast I was in and out of different rehabs and facilities and nothing would stick with me . When I came out here , just the way they approach it and take you in as like your a family member. They helped me with so many assets of my life even beyond substance abuse. The camaraderie is 2nd to no where else . I’m forever grateful for this place and giving me a fresh start. Highly recommend.

I've spent the last five years in and out of rehab facilities, battling substance abuse. I spent three months at Santa Barbara Recovery, utilizing every resource they had. Taking in and putting to use all the information their comprehensive groups offered. The staff are knowledgeable, compassionate and go to any lengths to help you recover. The environment is safe and comfortable which is extremely important in early recovery. I'm going on seven months sober, working, and attending college to pursue my dreams in Animal Welfare. I can't even begin to express my gratitude to all the people who make this program a success. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to live life once again, clean and sober.

My time here at Santa Barbara Recovery truly changed my life.. When I came in, I was carrying a lot mentally, emotionally, and spiritually but the vibe and aura felt safe .. and Through some of the toughest moments, the staff didn’t just treat me like a client, they treated me like a human being who mattered, . They listened, they cared, and they showed up consistently.. even when I didn’t deserve it .. That kind of support is rare. The environment felt safe, structured, and real. They helped me slow down, face things I used to run from, and start building a healthier version of myself and taught me how to choose me and put me first … What makes Santa Barbara Recovery special is that the care feels genuine. It’s not just about sobriety it’s about growth, accountability, and learning how to live differently. The staff truly wants to see you win, and you can feel that. I’m grateful for the tools, the honesty, and the compassion I received there. It’s more than a program it’s a place that helped me get my life back on track.

Healing from addiction is a comprehensive process that requires dedication and commitment. At Santa Barbara Recovery, we believe in taking a holistic approach to recovery that actively heals the whole person. Healing the whole person, not just the mind, can lead to results beyond your rehabilitation time.

Yoga is a cornerstone of our holistic treatment at Santa Barbara Recovery in California because we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing it transform lives. By establishing a deeper connection with their body and growing more grounded in their strength, yoga for addiction recovery can help people develop confidence and improve their general health.

The Importance of the Mind-Body Connection

One of the key principles of yoga therapy is the recognition of the mind-body connection. Addiction often disconnects individuals from their bodies, leading to a sense of disconnection from physical and emotional experiences. Through yoga therapy, individuals can begin to rebuild this connection by becoming more aware of their bodies, as well as their own emotions and thoughts. This increased awareness allows them to better understand their triggers and cravings.

The mind-body connection plays a crucial role in overall well-being. Chronic stress can manifest physically, which can lead to a variety of health issues such as high blood pressure, digestive problems, and weakened immune function. By practicing techniques that strengthen the mind-body connection, individuals can effectively reduce stress levels and improve their physical health.

The deep breathing exercises of yoga not only help individuals become more present in their bodies but also have a direct impact on the nervous system. This practice can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. By incorporating breathwork into their daily routine, individuals can cultivate inner peace and balance, fostering a harmonious relationship between mind and body.

How Yoga Therapy Differs from Yoga

Yoga therapy is far more than just basic yoga, even though yoga itself can be incredibly helpful for those undergoing recovery from addiction. Yoga therapists train for five times longer than standard yoga instructors and are given a complete profile (including medical information) for everyone who enters their classes seeking help. They are dedicated to helping individuals develop routines and overall more healthy lifestyles. More often, yoga therapists will help adapt routines to the needs of the individuals.

What is Yoga’s Effect on the Brain and Body?

Physically, yoga promotes flexibility, strength, and balance. But it also improves breath control and oxygenation, which can have a calming effect on the nervous system. These physical benefits, combined with the mental and emotional aspects of yoga, can have an enormous impact on the brain and thought processes of the person practicing yoga.

Yoga has been found to have a positive impact on the immune system. The gentle movements and stretches in yoga practice can help stimulate the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in the body’s defense against infections. The relaxation techniques and mindfulness practices incorporated in yoga can help individuals unwind and quiet the mind, which can lead to better sleep patterns. All of these can lead to improved cognitive dysfunction.

What Are the Benefits of Yoga for Addiction Recovery?

Did you know that incorporating yoga into addiction recovery can be beneficial? Yoga is a holistic approach that aids individuals in their journey towards recovery. Numerous recovery centers utilize yoga as a therapeutic method to assist individuals in managing withdrawal symptoms and coping with stress. Moreover, yoga promotes harmony between the mind and body, ultimately reducing addictive behaviors. Individuals grappling with addiction often feel powerless and trapped in a never-ending cycle.

The impact of addiction on the brain can make it challenging to regain control over one’s own body and life. Through yoga, individuals learn discipline and gain the ability to assess their reactions and regulate their emotions. Those who engage in yoga as part of their recovery treatment often find it easier to take ownership of their choices, thus reestablishing a sense of control over their mind and body. This triumph over addiction is truly empowering. The benefits of yoga for addiction recovery range widely. Some key benefits include:

  • Stress reduction: Yoga helps individuals manage stress by promoting mindfulness.
  • Emotional regulation: Yoga therapy provides tools and techniques for individuals to process and regulate their emotions healthily.
  • Increased self-awareness: Through yoga, individuals develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their triggers, and their patterns of behavior.
  • Improved mental clarity: Yoga can improve focus, concentration, and cognitive function, which can support individuals in making better decisions and staying committed to their recovery.
  • Enhanced mindfulness: Yoga encourages individuals to be present in the moment, reducing rumination and increasing overall well-being.
  • Physical healing: The physical aspects of yoga promote flexibility, strength, and improved overall health, supporting the body’s healing process.
  • Creates a sense of inner peace: Yoga cultivates a state of tranquility and inner harmony, and increased emotional resilience. Yoga provides individuals with the ability to prioritize mindfulness over temptations, thereby enhancing impulse control.
  • Relapse prevention technique: Approximately 90% of individuals experience relapse or some sort of setback before successfully overcoming addiction. Engaging in yoga allows individuals to change negative mindsets and behaviors linked to relapses, including impaired judgment and loss of control. This awareness of their physical state, enables them to identify early warning signs of relapse.

Furthermore, yoga offers a holistic approach to recovery by addressing not just the physical aspects of addiction but also the mental and emotional components. The practice of yoga encourages individuals to explore their inner selves, fostering a sense of self-compassion and acceptance that is crucial for long-term recovery.

Yoga for addiction can also directly support the brain by helping the body’s stress response. By helping to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis within the body, yoga can help an individual better cope with stress and regulate their attention. The focus on breath within the practice of yoga can help to stimulate the vagus nerve, triggering a relaxation response and helping to balance the autonomic nervous system. There have been some suggestions that yoga may help preserve the brain’s gray matter, as well as improve neuroplasticity (the ability to learn new information and skills).

How Holistic Therapy Can Be Used to Treat Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Holistic therapy, including yoga for addiction, treats addiction as a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. Holistic therapy focuses on healing the whole person, rather than just the symptoms of addiction. It incorporates complementary modalities such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. It’s inherently designed to address the underlying causes of addiction and promote lasting recovery.

The entire philosophy behind using holistic methods is to heal comprehensively alongside the help of conventional methods. Individual therapy and family therapy work alongside breathwork, mindful meditation, and outdoor trips to heal the entire person. Individual treatment plans are customized to suit the needs of each person and promote recovery that can last a lifetime.

Yoga for Treating Co-Occurring Disorders

Yoga for addiction can be a major asset for those undergoing treatment for a dual diagnosis, thanks to its potential for mental health benefits. The philosophy behind dual diagnosis is that addiction cannot be helped solely by treating addiction alone. Yoga’s benefits relate directly to connecting to the body and spirit, which explains why it’s a mainstay of our holistic treatment program.

If, for example, someone struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction, their treatment plan would take into account the effect that their mental illness has on their effort to maintain sobriety. For someone with bipolar disorder, this can include coping mechanisms or a desire to self-regulate during manic episodes. Or, conversely, the desire to raise one’s energy or interest levels during a depressive or hypomanic episode. Comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment conducted by mental health professionals familiar with mental illness can make an enormous difference in positive future outcomes.
