I came to Santa Barbara Recovery struggling with alcohol use disorder and honestly feeling lost and hopeless. I’ve been to several treatment centers before, but my experience at Santa Barbara Recovery was different in the best way. Spending 90 days there completely changed my life and gave me a second chance that I’ll always be grateful for. From the moment I arrived, the staff treated me with compassion, patience, and genuine care. The counselors, therapists, techs, and support staff created an environment where I felt safe enough to open up, be honest with myself, and really start working on my recovery. The groups were incredibly helpful and gave me tools that I still use every single day. One thing that really stood out to me was the bond that I built with both the staff and the other clients. There’s something powerful about being surrounded by people who truly understand the struggles that come with drugs and alcohol because they’ve either lived it themselves or have dedicated their lives to helping people through it. The connections I made during my time there felt genuine and unbreakable, and having that sense of community and support made a huge difference in my recovery. What also stood out to me was how personal and genuine the support felt. I never felt like just another client. The staff truly cared about helping me build a foundation for long-term sobriety, not just getting through treatment. One of the most important things Santa Barbara Recovery helped me with was getting involved in AA. Through the meetings and support they encouraged, I found a sponsor who is now guiding me through the 12 steps and helping me continue growing in sobriety outside of treatment. That sense of community and accountability has made a huge difference in my life. I especially want to give a huge thank you to Greg and Juan. Both of them were incredibly supportive, understanding, and always willing to listen when I was struggling. Their compassion, patience, and encouragement truly helped me through some difficult moments, and I’ll never forget the impact they had on my recovery journey. Recovery is not easy, but Santa Barbara Recovery gave me hope, structure, accountability, and a real support system when I needed it most. Today I’m sober, connected to recovery, and moving forward with a completely different outlook on life. I’m deeply grateful for everyone there and would highly recommend Santa Barbara Recovery to anyone who is serious about changing their life and getting sober.

This place helped change my life for the better . Being from the east coast I was in and out of different rehabs and facilities and nothing would stick with me . When I came out here , just the way they approach it and take you in as like your a family member. They helped me with so many assets of my life even beyond substance abuse. The camaraderie is 2nd to no where else . I’m forever grateful for this place and giving me a fresh start. Highly recommend.

I've spent the last five years in and out of rehab facilities, battling substance abuse. I spent three months at Santa Barbara Recovery, utilizing every resource they had. Taking in and putting to use all the information their comprehensive groups offered. The staff are knowledgeable, compassionate and go to any lengths to help you recover. The environment is safe and comfortable which is extremely important in early recovery. I'm going on seven months sober, working, and attending college to pursue my dreams in Animal Welfare. I can't even begin to express my gratitude to all the people who make this program a success. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to live life once again, clean and sober.

My time here at Santa Barbara Recovery truly changed my life.. When I came in, I was carrying a lot mentally, emotionally, and spiritually but the vibe and aura felt safe .. and Through some of the toughest moments, the staff didn’t just treat me like a client, they treated me like a human being who mattered, . They listened, they cared, and they showed up consistently.. even when I didn’t deserve it .. That kind of support is rare. The environment felt safe, structured, and real. They helped me slow down, face things I used to run from, and start building a healthier version of myself and taught me how to choose me and put me first … What makes Santa Barbara Recovery special is that the care feels genuine. It’s not just about sobriety it’s about growth, accountability, and learning how to live differently. The staff truly wants to see you win, and you can feel that. I’m grateful for the tools, the honesty, and the compassion I received there. It’s more than a program it’s a place that helped me get my life back on track.

If you’re willing to do the work and do what the program has to offer. You can change your life.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Santa Barbara Recovery is the most intensive level of outpatient treatment, where men spend most of the day in structured care and return home or to sober living at night. It treats addiction and the mental health conditions that come with it, and it bridges residential treatment and lighter outpatient care. We work with all major insurance.

What a Partial Hospitalization Program Is

A partial hospitalization program is full-day, structured treatment without the overnight stay, the most intensive care you can receive while still sleeping at home. PHP delivers nearly the same clinical hours as residential treatment, but instead of living on site, you go home or to sober living at the end of each day.

That balance is what makes PHP useful. You get intensive therapy, medical and psychiatric oversight, and daily structure, while keeping a foot in normal life and practicing recovery in the real world each evening. For many men it is the bridge between residential and independence, and for some it is the right place to start treatment when residential is not necessary or not possible.

PHP vs. IOP: Which Level Is Right?

The difference between PHP and IOP is intensity. A partial hospitalization program runs most of the day, most days of the week; an intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs fewer hours and fewer days, leaving room for work or school. PHP is the higher level of the two, and men often step down from PHP to IOP as they stabilize.

Most men move from PHP down to IOP as they get stronger. The two are stages of the same continuum, not competing choices, and our team places you at the level that matches where you are.

Who PHP Is For

PHP is the right level of care for men who need intensive, near-daily treatment but do not require 24-hour supervision. It fits two situations especially well: stepping down from residential treatment while still needing strong structure, or starting treatment when addiction is serious but home is stable enough to return to each night.

It is also a strong fit for men managing addiction alongside a mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, because PHP has the clinical and psychiatric intensity to treat both at once. If you need more than a few therapy sessions a week but do not need to live on site, PHP is usually the level that fits.

What PHP Looks Like Here

A day in PHP is built around structured clinical hours. You spend the bulk of the day in treatment, individual therapy, group sessions, and psychiatric and medical oversight, then return home or to sober living in the evening to apply what you are working on. The structure is close to residential, but you practice recovery in real life each night.

Treatment combines evidence-based therapies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, group work, family therapy, and experiential approaches, with psychiatric care for men managing a co-occurring condition. Because you go home each day, PHP also helps rebuild the daily routines, relationships, and responsibilities that lasting recovery depends on.

Where PHP Fits in Your Recovery

PHP sits in the middle of the continuum, more intensive than IOP and outpatient, less restrictive than residential. For most men it is one stage in a longer path: detox if needed, then residential, then PHP, then a step down through IOP and outpatient as independence grows.

You are not expected to stay in PHP indefinitely. The goal is to stabilize at this level, then step down as you are ready, with sober living and our alumni program supporting you the rest of the way. Wherever you enter the continuum, treatment is matched to clinical need, not a fixed schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a partial hospitalization program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the most intensive level of outpatient treatment, where you spend most of the day in structured care and return home at night. It delivers nearly residential-level clinical hours without the overnight stay, treating addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions.

PHP is more intensive than IOP. PHP runs most of the day, most days of the week, while IOP runs fewer hours and fewer days so you can keep up with work or school. Men often step down from PHP to IOP as they stabilize.

PHP delivers a similar intensity of treatment to inpatient rehab during the day, but you go home or to sober living at night instead of living on site. It is the closest outpatient level to residential, which is why it works well as a step down from it.

Yes. PHP has the clinical and psychiatric intensity to treat addiction alongside co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma. For men whose addiction and mental health are intertwined, treating both together is part of the program.

Length depends on clinical need and progress, not a fixed calendar. Most men spend a few weeks in PHP before stepping down to IOP, though it varies. Your team sets and adjusts the timeline based on how you are doing.

No. PHP is an outpatient level, so you return home or to sober living each evening. That is the main difference from residential treatment, and it is part of what makes PHP a bridge back toward independent life.

Yes. We work with all major insurance providers, and most plans cover partial hospitalization. We verify your benefits in minutes so you know where you stand first.
